NEWS ROUND-UP FROM THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY COMMUNITY

If you would like to include an announcement of an upcoming event or another newsworthy item in a future Grapevine Online, please contact Glee Murray (gmurray@aceee.org). We can’t promise to include each and every submission due to the timing of future Grapevines, but we will try hard to do so.

Meet Home Energy's New Executive Director at ACEEE's 2008 Summer Study and Give Congratulations to the Magazine for 25 Years of Energy Efficiency Reporting!

As they have for nearly two decades, the staff of Home Energy Magazine, currently celebrating 25 years of publishing "all the home energy news that's fit to print," will be at Asilomar to publish Summer Study's onsite The Grapevine. Jim Gunshinan will be Managing Editor of The Grapevine. Home Energy's new Publisher and Executive Director, Tom White, will also be on hand. Although he's been on the job for a few months, ACEEE would like to congratulate Tom on his appointment to the venerable Home Energy Magazine and congratulate all of the past and present members of its hard-working staff and Board of Directors for 25 years of covering the residential home energy efficiency beat. As Alan Meier, Home Energy's Founder and Senior Executive Editor, put it: "Tom is the ideal person to place Home Energy on top of the green building tsunami."

2008 Recycle My Old Fridge Campaign
July 28 Deadline: Enter Energy Star's Video Challenge & Tell Your Story

An old fridge is an inefficient fridge. In fact, there are more than 47 million refrigerators over 10 years old in the United States, costing consumers an average of $4.7 billion a year in energy costs.

This national call to action, led by the U.S. Department of Energy, encourages consumers to recycle old, inefficient refrigerators and, when needed, replace them with new ENERGY STAR qualified models.

If everyone who purchases a new refrigerator in 2008 chooses a model that meets the new ENERGY STAR criteria, together, we would prevent the equivalent of 1.38 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

Spread the word: Through July 28, you can enter Energy Star's Video Challenge to tell your story about recycling your old fridges. Voting for favorite videos will continue through August 4. Up to three national winners will be selected and awarded a trip to Washington, D.C. in September to participate in a campaign celebration at the National Building Museum. The celebration will also feature the Recycle My Old Fridge Art Exhibition showcasing artfully decorated old refrigerators.

Have an artistic bent? Your organization can enter the ENERGY STAR Recycle My Old Fridge Art Exhibition. Choose a representative old fridge or fridge door from your office and decorate it for the exhibition, which runs the last week of August through the first week of September in Washington.

Encourage your friends and neighbors, when buying a new fridge, to choose an ENERGY STAR qualified model. New ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators are at least 20 percent more energy efficient than the minimum federal standard.

Be sure to check out our campaign toolkit.  It includes savings facts, posters, flyers, a linkable Web site button, and more. To learn more about the campaign, visit www.RecycleMyOldFridge.com or contact info@RecycleMyOldFridge.com.

The time is right. Help us change the world, one refrigerator at a time.
