Job Description:

To complete Pacific Crest Labs’ growing list of high-impact energy efficiency research projects related to televisions, set-top boxes, demand response, network gear, IoT and other network connected devices, we plan to hire a consultant. We are open to a broad range of education and experience levels. The successful candidate need not demonstrate expertise in all the job responsibilities listed below. However, he or she must have a track record of high achievement, technical knowledge, and the ability to deliver complex written analysis to demanding internal or external clients. We are an internationally recognized research firm, and we need employees who are committed to developing their skills to a point where they can win bids and deliver breakthrough results.  


  • Lab and field testing and analysis of electronic products (e.g. TVs, PC monitors, computers, servers, set-top boxes, game consoles, printers, home battery storage systems). Pacific Crest Labs measurement equipment includes a Chroma power supply, Yokogawa power analyzer, and LabVIEW software to perform precise low power measurements per the IEC 62301 test method.

    • Conducting power measurements of electronic devices

    • Organizing results in spreadsheets

    • Preparing charts and reports that describe the test results and methodology

    • Documenting lab procedures

    • Supervising the buying and selling devices to test

    • Supervising the acquisition and service of lab equipment

  • Market analysis

    • Evaluating new technologies and market trends through web research or in-store research

    • Outreach to manufacturers and other market actors
    • Identifying, purchasing, and interpreting market research reports

    • Supervising the use of web price scrapers to analyze price trends

  • Policy analysis

    • Analyzing national and international energy efficiency standards, labels and test methods

    • Identifying policy alternatives and making recommendations

  • Surveys

    • Conducting on-line surveys using Amazon Mechanical Turk and/or other tools

    • Determining survey sample size requirements and other statistical analysis tasks

  • Engineering analysis (of electronics like set-top boxes, TVs, computers, game consoles)

    • Tear-down analysis

    • Bill of materials (BOM) analysis

    • Architectural analysis

    • Manufacturer / vendor outreach

  • Client spreadsheets, reports and presentation

  • Conference presentations and publications

  • Project management

  • Business development:

    • Reviewing RFPs

    • Writing proposals

    • Contributing to business plan development

  • Status reports and invoices

  • Stakeholder and client presentations


Technical degree: BSE, MSE or PhD in EE or CS preferred.

Skills and Experience:

Conducting testing, analyzing data, and summarizing the results in tables, charts, and reports requires a broad skillset. Successful consultants in this field typically have:

  • An understanding of electronics components, features, use cases, and industry trends

  • Hi-tech industry experience

  • A working knowledge of networking standards and technologies

  • An understanding energy, power, and unit conversion

  • An understanding of smart grid technologies and the utility regulatory framework

  • Effective written and oral communications skills

  • The ability to work independently, tolerate ambiguity, learn, and solve complex problems

  • A focus on results (e.g. quality, performance to schedule and budget)

  • A commitment to continuous improvement
