Position Description

The Office of Sustainability and the Environment is seeking a Data Analytics Intern to support data cleaning and analysis of benchmarking data to support the Energy Benchmarking and Reporting (EBR) Program. The intern will assist the program in preparing data for analysis, publishing benchmarking data on data.seattle.gov, improving data quality of benchmarked buildings, and maintaining online building profiles.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Data cleaning and analysis
    • Assist in processing annual benchmarking data to prepare for publishing, including checking buildings for errors, assessing data quality indicators, and working to improve data quality.
    • Conduct analysis of benchmarking data to update annual tracking metrics for building characteristics, energy performance, and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Support publishing of analysis results online
    • Assist in the development of data visualizations and summary of findings, including:
      • Tableau dashboards and visualizations
      • Description of key findings
      • Development of blog posts or newsletter content

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

Education
Must be enrolled in an accredited educational program preferably studying sustainable energy, built environment, public policy, statistics or related area of study.

Undergraduate students will need to maintain a 2.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.

Graduate students will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.

Engineering students will need to maintain a 2.5 GPA or above throughout the internship.

Experience: 

  • Data management and analysis skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and other software tools that support data analysis, visualization, and communication
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team

Desired Qualifications

  • Possess an interest in sustainable energy and have exposure to coursework in climate change, statistical analysis, and/or data modeling
  • Experience with Tableau, MS Access, SQL, and/or GIS
  • Interest or understanding of building energy efficiency operations and maintenance

 

Additional Information

Start/End Dates:  Intern will start in late June/early July, 2018 and end September, 2018, with a potential to extend 10-15 hours/week into the fall quarter.
 
Schedule:  Intern will work 20 hours/week.  Work hours can be scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
 
Salary:  undergraduates will be paid $16.56//hour; graduates will be paid $20.30/hour; engineering students will be paid $20.07/hour to $22.59/hour, depending on class standing.
