About the Position:
The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Technology Assessment Fellow to join its Building Energy Management Group to contribute to its building energy consumption characterization and building technology assessment projects for industry, government, and utility clients. This is an opportunity to participate in exciting research projects within Fraunhofer CSE. Fellowships typically last for 6 months, but longer fellowships can also be accommodated.
Over the past decade, Fraunhofer CSE team members have authored several landmark studies characterizing building energy consumption, most notably for consumer electronics and miscellaneous electronic loads, and evaluating energy-savings opportunities for building technologies. We regularly present the findings of these studies at major building energy efficiency conferences, and prior Fellows have co-authored studies. Working with our team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing and future studies that form the basis for sound government and utility policy decisions, and to learn how to approach such projects.
You will work with the Building Energy Management team to learn how to and contribute to projects to characterize energy consumption of energy-consuming devices and systems in buildings, applying a variety of different methodologies.
In addition, you may learn how to and contribute to building technology assessment studies to evaluate several attributes integral to the real-world success of novel building technologies, such as: Energy savings potential; Current and future economics; Non-energy benefits; Non-economic barriers to widespread commercialization, and R&D needs to achieve widespread commercialization.
Preferred Experience and Education:
An excellent academic record with an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, etc.) and:
- Available to start May 2017
- A strong background in energy-related engineering or physics
- Familiarity with the operating principles of energy-consuming equipment and systems in buildings
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary work and thinking
- Excellent written communication skills
- Ability to accept a high degree of responsibility in a team-based organization, combined with ability to work independently
- Willingness to go the extra mile to support the team’s research projects
Applicants for a FhCSE internship must be enrolled in University or within 1 year of graduation at the time of internship.
