This analysis, published as a chapter in Demand-Side Management and Electricity End-Use Efficiency edited by Anibal T. De Almeida and Arthur H. Rosenfeld, examines the energy and economic savings that can be expected from the national minimum efficiency standards for appliances signed into law by President Reagan in March, 1987. These standard s represent a compromise agreed to by appliance manufacturers and conservation advocates. The proposed standards levels are listed in Appendix A. The savings are calculated on a product-by-product basis using a consistent methodology, as explained in the report.
