When is the Next Summer Study?

The 2003 ACEEE Summer Study was the 6th biennial ACEEE conference on Energy Efficiency in Industry. Participants from around the world gathered for three days to discuss technical, policy, and program issues related to increasing energy efficiency in industry. Presentations and discussions related to the theme "Sustainability and Industry: Increasing Energy Efficiency and Reducing Emissions." Attendees included energy decision makers from industry, equipment manufacturers, government policy makers, electric utility staff, energy consultants, leading industrial energy researchers, and academics.

At the most abstract level, sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Translated more concretely with respect to industry, sustainability means not only using natural resources wisely and efficiently, but also providing products that minimize waste and pollution. The latter of these considerations becomes increasingly important as economies become more service-oriented. The 2003 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry focused on issues related to increasing the sustainablity of the industrial sector, with an emphasis on improving energy efficiency and reducing related atmospheric emissions throughout the entire life-cycle of manufactured products. The Summer Study highlighted energy efficiency technologies, policies, and actions that contribute to more sustainable industrial production both in the U.S. and internationally.

The Objectives of Summer Study 2003

Enhance communication between academic and government experts conducting research in the field of industrial energy efficiency and sustainability as well as the private sector that must ultimately implement energy efficiency and sustainability practices.

Stimulate additional research on technologies, products, social aspects, and policies required to achieve industrial energy efficiency and sustainability.

Conference Program

The final schedule shows the highlighted activities. Over 100 papers were formally presented in the mornings. The afternoons offered opportunities for participants to organize informal discussions about self-selected topics. The Display Sessions were an integral part of the Summer Study; they featured brief oral presentations followed by discussion. This year a special session focused on "Partnerships to Address Sustainability." Plenary sessions were held in the evenings. Bjorn Stigson, President of the World Business Council on Sustainable Development, opened the Summer Study with a Keynote Speech on the evening of July 29th.
