2004 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings

2004 ACEEE Informal Sessions Descriptions

Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the Summer Study. Visit the office in Surf and Sand to sign up for an Informal Session.

Session Synopsis - "Miscellaneous and Low-Power-Mode Energy in Zero-Energy Buildings"

Rich Brown, LBNL
Bruce Nordman, LBNL
John Busch, LBNL

Monday, August 23
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Miscellaneous energy consumption — everything apart from the traditional end uses of HVAC, general lighting, water heating, and major appliances — and low-power mode consumption — electricity consumed while devices are not performing their primary function — account for a significant share of energy use in buildings (e.g., 25% of electricity use in the average U.S. home). This energy use is expected to grow faster than any other end-use in buildings in the coming decades. At the same time, DOE, CEC and other public agencies have adopted Zero-Energy Buildings (ZEB) as the long-term goal for their energy-efficiency programs, which will require significant reductions in energy consumption. These two trends seem to be on a collision course. One can easily imagine miscellaneous devices accounting for 50% or more of the energy consumed in future ZEBs.

This session will be a roundtable discussion of the following topics:

  • What do we currently know about miscellaneous energy use in ZEB?
  • What research efforts are currently underway?
  • How should the ZEB research agenda be supplemented to address these growing energy users?
  • Are new policy strategies needed?
