Informal Sessions Description
Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the Summer
Study.
Session
Synopsis - "Plant Energy Profiler (PEP) Tool for Energy Intensive Industries"
James Quinn, U.S. Dept. of Energy
Wednesday, July 20
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
A cooperative effort between the Dept. of Energy and the Chemical industry
was conducted to develop a Plant Energy Profiler (PEP) Tool. The tool was
issued in the spring of 2005. The PEP Tool enables chemical plant energy
managers to baseline energy flows in the plant; identify major energy-using
equipment and unit operations; and develop a broad perspective of
plant-wide energy savings opportunities. DOE is currently starting an
effort to adapt this approach to allow use of the tool in a wide range of
energy intensive industries. This session will begin with a description and
demonstration of the current PEP tool for the chemical industry and will
outline the plan for an "All-Industry PEP". There will then be a
discussion and brainstorming session to explore needs of plant energy
managers including how the PEP tool could be expanded, adapted and improved
to meet plant needs and facilitate saving energy.
