2008 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry

Informal Sessions Description

Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the Summer Study.

Europe struggles with smart metering.

Henk van Elburg

Thursday, August 21
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Residential smart metering is rapidly penetrating the EU energy market. Backed by the European Services Directive (ESD), smart metering and advanced energy feed back systems for households are expected to (commercially) 'boost' everywhere in the EU. Nevertheless, the ESD is also subject to different interpretations and implementations, creating a very uneven market across Europe for households and the potential benefits for the environment. To pave the way for all interested stakeholders in and outside Europe, the EU Commission supports the forming of the European Smart Metering Alliance (ESMA). This Alliance, made up of research groups, utilities, energy agencies, vendors and trade associations, wants to present and discuss at ACEEE the latest insights in European smart metering implementations. The central focus will be on national practices and favourable energy feedback systems for households regarding energy efficient consumption behaviour.
