Envisioning Energy Efficiency
Harvey Sachs
Monday, August 18
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Human communication of ideas and meaning is deeply rooted in the use of signs and symbols. Consider the (incandescent) light bulb, an 19th century invention that persists in the 21st century as a symbol of "bright idea." The bulb itself is largely obsolete, but the icon remains as a powerful if ironic symbol. We will explore various symbols of energy efficiency, in the continuing search for better ones. How does one visualize an invisible resource? We will stimulate thought by presenting a variety of efficiency-related symbols (Energy Star, renewable energy, etc.). We will also present a variety of schematic concepts derived from core graphics such as energy supply and efficiency "jaws," and the supply curve of energy efficiency technologies. Some abstracted symbols, such as the first EPA "Green Lights" ideogram, a light bulb morphing from a flower stalk, will also be shown. Mostly, bring your sketches and ideas (on a "thumb drive") for the elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow: energy efficiency's own "Smoky the Bear," "Peace Symbol," or radioactivity warning logo.
