What Was the Hot Water Forum?
The last year saw major developments for hot water efficiency. DOE launched the ENERGY STAR water heating program, ARRA funding enhanced the reach of efficiency programs, and new federal efficiency standards are to be announced this Spring. Water use is drawing increased attention, and the President is promoting energy efficiency. At this critical time, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) held the 2010 Forum on Water Heating, Distribution, and Use Efficiency, at the Doubletree Hotel Ontario Airport in Ontario, California, from May 12 - May 14. This event will brought together manufacturers; water, gas, and electric utilities; government and other program and policy specialists; and other industry representatives to learn from each other and explore the potential of increasing efficiency of hot water generation, distribution, and use (fixtures and appliances), with special emphasis on the ENERGY STAR program, solar water heating, multifamily and commercial applications, and water efficiency.
The program featured short, results-oriented talks, supplemented by table-top displays and presentations in the principal networking area.

The 2010 Hot Water Forum was Dedicated to R. Michael Martin
ACEEE and the Hot Water Forum Steering Committee dedicate the
2010 Hot Water Forum to R. Michael Martin, PE (August
16, 1928 – January 1, 2009) for his 33 years
of dedication to excellence to the field of energy efficiency and in the development
and implementation of the world’s first appliance
efficiency regulations which continually serve as
a model for others to follow.
Possessing a deep feel for the intent of appliance efficiency
regulations, he provided answers to each
question we should have asked. A valued mentor,
he taught by example how to live a life of integrity
and principle and unending commitment to
public service and the common good. He was an
enthusiastic, devoted, and very successful doer
of deeds, all toward a very worthy cause. Most of
all, he was a true and dear friend to many of us in
the efficiency field and is, and will
be, keenly missed.
ACEEE thanks the California Energy Commission for permission to reprint this dedication from the 2009 Appliance Efficiency Regulations.
