Smart Growth Policies

Summary: Florida established two land-use programs in 1972: the Environmental Land and Water Management Act and the Areas of Critical State Concern statute, both designed to regulate the impact of mass development. In 1985, the state adopted the Local Government Comprehensive Planning and Land Development Regulation Act, requiring all municipalities and counties to create local comprehensive plans to guide development in the state. In 1986, Florida adopted a Statewide Comprehensive Plan, outlining the goals to be met by local action plans.
