Smart Growth Policies

Summary: Maine adopted a Growth Management Act in 1987 that aimed to encourage growth in certain areas of the state while also planning for and financing an efficient system of public facilities and amenities that would cater to added development. The Act also encouraged municipalities to plan for future growth by developing comprehensive local plans while keeping the regional impact in perspective.

To encourage coordinated development by municipalities, counties and regions, the state has developed a fund disbursement system that gives preference to multi-municipal planning efforts.
