Smart Growth Policies

Summary: Pennsylvania enacted the “Growing Greener” and “Growing Smarter” legislation in 2000 in an effort to control sprawl and encourage development in core urban communities. The enacted legislation directs municipalities to create comprehensive land-use plans and to identify Locally Designated Growth Areas – areas likely to see significant development in the future. As part of the “Growing Greener” act, Pennsylvania set aside $650 million to address environmental priorities.
