EPA’s SmartWay Program: Partnering with Freight Movers to Cut Fuel Consumption and Emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Program is a partnership with the freight industry to reduce fuel consumption and air pollution. Launched in 2004, this program has worked with more than 3,500 shippers and logistics companies and has saved almost 200 million barrels of oil, lowered fuel costs by $28 billion and reduced emissions of harmful air pollutants by 94 million tons. This fact sheet discusses the benefits of this partnership so far and how it has spurred the adoption of sustainable technologies and operational practices in freight sector.
