Ariel Drehobl testified to the Subcommittee on Energy of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce on the topic of “Generating Equity: Improving Clean Energy Access and Affordability.” Her testimony emphasized that access to clean, affordable energy is vital to maintaining health and well-being, even as many U.S. households experience energy insecurity. She spoke about ACEEE’s recent research on energy burdens that found that low-income households, Black, Hispanic, Native American, older adult, and renting households face disproportionate burdens. She emphasized that energy efficiency and weatherization provide a long-term solution to reducing high energy burdens and that Congress can take action to improve equity in the clean energy sector by increasing investment in weatherization for low and moderate-income households, targeting affordable multifamily housing, leveraging health dollars, and creating guidance around utility-shut-offs, energy efficiency and COVID-19 recovery.
