There is substantial potential energy savings from more efficient set-top boxes, including digital TV converter boxes, cable boxes, and satellite receivers/tuners, much of which is driven by the scheduled conversion to digital broadcasting. Early analyses of the national energy savings achievable through standards projected large savings, but revealed the need for further research on market trends and technical developments affecting the overall energy consumption of set-top boxes. This report presents findings from more detailed research into the rapidly evolving market for set-top boxes, updates energy savings projections, and offers recommendations for standards at the state and national level.
