In this role, you will support the development, maintenance, and execution of tools for data analysis and modeling that use time-series data on building and system-level loads to assess the need for and availability of energy efficiency and demand response resources within electric utility power systems. This position will contribute to energy efficiency and demand response research projects, primarily by performing tasks related to data management and analysis. Research outputs will be directly relevant to decision-makers and industry stakeholders in regulatory and other policymaking contexts.
Employees in the Scientific Engineering Associate role in EAEI provide multifunctional technical support, applying engineering or scientific concepts and practices in a scientific or engineering field in one or more of the following areas of specialized expertise: design of experimental apparatuses, scientific or engineering support, or coordination. They contribute to project processes and investigate, create and develop new methods and techniques for project advancement.
The EMP Group conducts data driven, public interest research on a variety of issues associated with electricity markets, such electric system reliability, the role of energy efficiency, demand response, renewable energy and distributed generation resources, and retail energy markets.
What You Will Do:
• Apply technical principles to develop tools and processes to collect, clean, and analyze time-series data. Assist with developing efficient, robust, flexible, secure, and user-friendly systems for collecting, inputting, storing, and retrieving data required for analyses. Data may include:
- Hourly building load profiles.
- Hourly savings shapes for energy efficiency and demand response resources.
- Utility- or system-level load shapes and forecasts of future load growth.
• Contribute to the development of analyses and modeling approaches that scale building-level load data to utility or regional electricity system loads to address the need for and availability of demand response to support the bulk power system.
• Maintain and improve existing analytical tools, algorithms, and code related to assigned research projects.
• Contribute to reports, journal articles, and public presentations.
What is Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Economics, or a related field, and a minimum of 2 years of professional technical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Familiarity with the technological and regulatory landscape related to energy efficiency and demand response in one or more US regions.
• Experience with Python analysis or modeling.
• Demonstrated experience performing complex analysis on large (multi-GB) datasets.
• Basic familiarity with relational databases and SQL.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to identify and obtain information from diverse sources, collaborate with other researchers, present results at industry and academic conferences, and write research reports and conference papers.
What We Desire:
• Advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Economics, or a related field.
• Experience with one or more of the following: analysis of building energy consumption or energy efficiency, building simulation modeling, or power system modeling (e.g., production cost or capacity expansion modeling).
• Significant on-the-job experience with data analysis and management using Python and SQL.
• Demonstrated experience performing research using (simulated or real-world) time-series data on building load shapes.
• Experience or familiarity with utility resource planning processes and tools.
• Experience or familiarity with demand response and energy efficiency programs, including evaluation of program cost-effectiveness and savings.
• Experience or familiarity with standard building simulation tools (e.g., Energy Plus).
• Demonstrated interest in best practices for software development and design.

• This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year Term appointment with the possibility of extension for a total of 5 years or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
