Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology Urban Systems (BTUS, https://buildings.lbl.gov/) Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join the Building and Industrial Application (BIA) Department!
In this role, you will use data analysis, software development, and engineering principles to support projects related to manufacturing-related technology development and energy efficiency. This role will focus on the collection, management, and analysis of information on manufacturing process technologies. You will develop python-based web applications and user interfaces, develop and apply algorithms to support data analysis for process energy use, and develop workflows that combine data management and analysis algorithms.
Additionally, this position will support collection, processing, analysis, and presentation of data related to the primary focus as well as dissemination of information about the BIA Department activities via webinars, publications, and reports.
The Building and Industrial Application Department (BIA) conducts research on adoption of clean energy technologies, focusing specifically on large organizations, industrial facilities and processes, and energy-intensive buildings. Our research is intended to encourage more rapid adoption of technologies and techniques intended to reduce energy use in non-residential building sectors.
What You Will Do:
• Provide resolution and analysis for technical problems within the manufacturing sector using a combination of data analysis and software tool development.
• Perform quality control and assurance on collected data.
• Create and maintain a central repository for collected data.
• Conduct data analysis on manufacturing process energy use.
• Communicate to LBNL staff the data collection protocols, quality control and assurance process, and location and organization of central data repository.
• Prepare visualization of data and analysis results for inclusion in multiple media formats (e.g., web, print, presentations).
• Document and synthesize results into resources for dissemination (e.g., white/conference/journal papers, technical guidance, content for software tools).
• Collaborate with internal and external researchers and stakeholders to inform research direction and communicate results.
• Provide data analysis and web application development for projects related to process heating, combined heat and power (CHP) systems, or district energy (DE) systems in the U.S.
What Is Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Applied Sciences, or a related discipline and a minimum of 2 years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated experience in Python 3 and related libraries for management of datasets, and data post-processing/analysis.
• Experience with energy efficiency concepts and principles, particularly for the manufacturing sector.
• Experience in Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, Environmental / Energy Technology, or related fields.
• Experience executing and optimizing algorithms using statistical analysis.
• Demonstrated success designing, implementing, and supporting data systems and software related to energy/environmental systems.
• Excellent analytical, problem solving, and decision making skills to independently make sound judgments and find creative solutions to moderately complex problems.
• Effective time management, organization and planning skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
What We Desire:
• Masters Degree in Engineering, Applied Sciences, or a related discipline.
• Familiarity with one or more of the following databases: postgreSQL, MongoDB.
• Experience with web application development.
• Comfort with relational database concepts and SQL.
• Certificate from a US DOE Industrial Assessment Center.
• An understanding of combustion, combustion systems, CHP, and DE Systems.

• This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of extension for up to a total of 5 years or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
• This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
