Transforming the transportation sector, responsible for 30% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and a major source of harmful air pollution, is essential to combating climate change, reducing transportation costs, and creating more vibrant communities.
ACEEE helps inform and advocate for innovative technologies, policies, and programs that reduce transportation-related energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Our data-backed research and direct technical support helps local, state, and national public and private entities reach their clean transportation goals.
ACEEE’s transportation program aims to reshape the transportation sector by enhancing transportation options and promoting the electrification and efficiency of passenger and freight vehicles. Our technical expertise includes vehicle emissions standards, utility planning and program design for electric vehicles, and innovative and flexible approaches to bringing energy-efficient transportation options to more people.
Focus Areas
- Utility Support for EVs: We convene and provide technical support to bolster utility programs and policies that expand access to electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, particularly in underserved communities, and ensure grid readiness for growing EV adoption. Our work includes promoting utility investments and programs that accelerate vehicle electrification for passenger cars, trucks, and buses while managing demand to maintain a resilient grid that provides affordable energy.
- Sustainable Freight: Our work supports a coordinated effort to reduce freight emissions, with a particular focus on truck fleet electrification. We engage in research and dialogue with both the private and public sectors, providing input to advance and optimize freight transport.
- Mobility Choices: By developing tools and resources and providing hands-on technical assistance, we support states and cities with prioritizing strategies, policies, and projects that offer sustainable transportation options to connect communities and provide equitable and efficient access to housing, jobs, and other essential destinations.
- Vehicle Lifecycle Efficiency: We champion vehicle emission standards and fuel economy standards, advocate for federal and state policies that enhance vehicle efficiency, and work to ensure all vehicles are more efficient. Recognizing the importance of sustainable materials and circular practices, we support efforts to reduce energy use throughout the vehicle manufacturing processes, encourage materials reuse, and advance battery recycling and repurposing.
ACEEE is committed to advancing sustainable transportation solutions through research, policy advocacy, and technical assistance. Through these initiatives, ACEEE seeks to create a healthier, more sustainable, and more affordable transportation system.

Measuring Success
We measure our progress by tracking the following metrics:
- Federal and state adoption of stringent emissions standards for cars and trucks
- Increases in charging stations per capita in disadvantaged communities
- Reductions in vehicle miles traveled and transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions at the federal, state, and local levels
- Utilities and regulators committing to programs and grid planning to proactively prepare for truck fleet electrification
