This report explores the opportunity for substantial energy savings from premium central air conditioner features that are undervalued because they do not raise efficiency ratings on the federal test. Such features include variable capacity, enhanced adaptive dehumidification capabilities, and on-board diagnostics with alarms for common troubles. We conservatively estimate savings of 10%, which is more than the improvement from SEER 14 to SEER 15.
