1988 Lighting Ballast Efficiency Standards: Analysis of Electricity and Economic Savings

Research Report A883

Howard S. Geller, Peter S. Miller

The objective of this report is to describe the national minimum efficiency standards for fluorescent lamp ballast that were passed into law in 1988 and to estimate the electricity, peak demand, and dollar savings from these standards.  The report begins with an overview of the current state of ballast technology.  Second, the report reviews the development of federal ballast standards.  Third, the requirements of the standards are discussed.  Finally, an estimate of the expected savings is presented.
