ACEEE conducted this ground-breaking analysis to determine the near-term impact of modest increases in energy efficiency and renewable energy on wholesale natural gas prices. Assisted by the state-of-the-art gas market model developed by the consulting firm Energy and Environmental Analysis (EEA) and used by the National Petroleum Council in its 2003 landmark report on the future of natural gas in the U.S., the study found that end-use energy savings in the 2% range would reduce natural gas wholesale prices up to 20% within a 1-5 year time frame, generating energy savings of more than $100 billion for consumers.
