This is a concise overview of transportation energy use in the U.S. The paper includes an analysis of the historical changes in energy intensity by transportation mode. Trends in highway travel and light vehicle fuel economy, and factors that contribute to their change are discussed. Technologies for improving fuel economy, public policies for encouraging their use, and related issues are also addressed. The overview was published in the 1989 Annual Review of Energy.
