The Greenish Machine: On the Road to Reduced CO2 Emissions via Alternative Fuels and Higher Fuel Economy

Research Report T923

John DeCicco

This study examines the costs, energy savings and CO2 reductions for new automotive technologies, comparing improved efficiency vehicles with alcohol, natural gas and electricity-powered vehicles. It concludes that there is much overlap between efficiency improvement technologies and alternative fuels utilization; thus, improving fuel economy can facilitate a long-term switch to alternative fuels while providing substantial near-term energy savings and emissions reductions
