Freight movement accounted for 31% of all U.S. transportation-sector greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, and its share continues to grow. Over the past decade, applications of information and communications technologies (ICT) have emerged as major opportunities to improve efficiency in the handling and transportation of goods. These briefs illustrate how the freight industry is working to reduce energy consumption and emissions using three ICT-based approaches: increasing truck load factor, streamlining port-related moves, and expanding the exchange of data.
