This is the first in a series of technical briefs exploring emerging opportunities for energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings. Information and control technologies (ICT) save energy by monitoring and controlling building systems like lighting and HVAC. Integrated energy management and information systems (EMIS) can achieve even deeper savings. This brief focuses on various types of EMIS, their costs, potential energy savings, and challenges to more widespread use. It also explores energy efficiency program designs that encourage building owners to adopt these technologies.
