The 2023 Hot Water Forum (HWF) comes at a critical—and promising—time. The emergence of new water-heating technologies combined with the investments in building decarbonization and workforce development made by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act creates the opportunity for significant market transformation. This is a pivotal moment for the hot water industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve grid resilience, and center equity.
In addition, ACEEE presents the inaugural Hot Air Forum (HAF), which will focus on decarbonizing space heating given the monumental federal funding opportunities. This forum will precede the HWF and include a day to discuss the crossover between space and water heating.
Likely participants: Equipment and component manufacturers; water, gas, and electric utility professionals; local, state, and federal agency personnel; energy efficiency program planners, operators, and evaluators; plumbers and installers; policymakers; NGOs; engineers; consultants; and other experts.

Hot Air Forum Plenary Session

“When Decarbonizing the Air Side...Five Years from Now, Where Will We Be and Where Should We Be?”
The inaugural plenary session of the Hot Air Forum (HAF) will kick off with Kandice Cohen of Trane Technologies. Kandice will discuss decarbonizing the air side of the space conditioning industry and ponder 5 years from now where we might be contrasted with where we should aspire to be. This session will consider the big picture and what's needed to tie together policy and programs through collaboration to set the context (and make you think a bit!) for the detailed sessions that will follow.
Hot Air & Hot Water Forum Plenary Session

“A Vision of the Policy Future – Policies, Funding, and Approaches for Energy and Emissions from a Federal and State Perspective”
Our combined HWF/HAF plenary on Wednesday morning will feature two perspectives (state and federal) on using energy efficiency and decarbonization to reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions from space and water heating. Together, our two speakers will discuss A Vision of the Policy Future - Policies, Funding, and Approaches for Leading the Way on Energy and Emissions Reductions. The state perspective will be provided by Andrew McAllister, a long-time commissioner on the California Energy Commission. California has been a leader on how energy efficiency and decarbonization and is ranked #1 in ACEEE’s most recent State Energy Efficiency Scorecard. Andrew is one of the key leaders in this effort. The federal perspective will be provided by Ashley Armstrong from DOE and will include discussion of some of the extensive new funding for energy efficiency and decarbonization in the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act.

“Workforce & Equity – The Crossover of Workforce and Equity Within States and Utilities Within Programs and Policies”
The Thursday Hot Water Forum plenary will encompass “real world impacts” of our policy objectives on water heating including workforce and equity. Learn about the impacts within programs and policies locally, within states, and for utilities. Hear from a utility on compliance work and the importance of securing the promised savings from codes and standards activities. Also learn about workforce and development priorities and policies in the field.

Shameless Commerce
On the evening of Tuesday, March 8, we’ll be hosting our “Shameless Commerce” event. One of our most popular forum activities, it allows attendees to pitch new products or services. In a rapid-fire format, each participant will have the opportunity to present a three-minute infomercial, and the audience will select the best one. Participation at the upcoming forum(s) requires that you agree to the following bulleted list and to take a COVID test no more than 48 hours prior to your arrival (with the understanding that a positive result will cancel your registration). All attendees must sign this agreement to attend. More information can be found through the registration link.
Also, by attending the forum(s), you assume all risk related to exposure to COVID and other communicable diseases. ACEEE will not be held liable for illness. You agree to take all the necessary precautions while at the event which includes appropriate social distancing and wearing a mask in public areas except when eating, drinking, or presenting. You also agree that if you feel ill or have been recently exposed to COVID, you will not attend the Hot Air/Hot Water Forums. If you should become ill at the event, ACEEE will provide an antigen test on site. You agree that a positive result will cancel your registration. If this agreement is not signed prior to arrival, a copy must be signed on site before receiving your conference materials.
