Washington, DC—The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy released the following statement from Peter Huether, its senior research associate for transportation, in response to the Environmental Protection Agency issuing final new emissions standards for light-duty vehicles:

“The standards announced today are a step forward for cleaner air and lower costs for drivers. They will lead to the cleanest vehicles to date and help us meet the president’s climate pledges. These standards will reduce pollution that disproportionately harms low-income communities and communities of color.

“While these standards move us in the right direction, they are weaker than what we advocated for, and EPA chose to delay the phaseout of the off-cycle credit system in the early years, which will reduce the effective stringency of the standard.”
