Options for Reducing Oil Use by Light Vehicles: An Analysis of Technologies and Policy

This study analyzes technologies and policies available for improving the fuel economy of cars and light trucks. It shows that the average rated fuel economy of new cars can be cost-effectively improved to 42 MPG in 10 years. Also discussed are polices needed to achieve such improvements, including standards, the guzzler tax, rebates, fuel pricing, and support for innovation.
