State Industrial Policy

The U.S. industrial sector, a key economic engine that drives American competitiveness and innovation, accounts for a quarter of the nation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing the sector’s emissions will require widespread energy management and efficiency, new low-carbon industrial processes, switching to electricity and carbon-free fuels and feedstocks, and mitigation technologies—all of which require close coordination with state-level decisionmakers and groups.

In areas like grid planning, permitting, community benefits, and equity, ACEEE provides research and input on how states can chart their path towards a decarbonized industrial sector. Our team engages with state decisionmakers and stakeholders to advocate for policies like demand flexibility, industrial electrification, grid-planning, decarbonized process heat, and a workforce plan that is equitable and provides good jobs for industrial host communities.
